Board Member Role Description
Fund Texas Choice (FTC) is actively recruiting new Board Members, with a particular need for someone to serve as Treasurer and provide financial oversight and leadership. By “financially-adept”, we mean candidates with experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and regulatory compliance for nonprofits.
Term of Office
Two years with the possibility of renewal for two additional terms.
Time Commitment
The FTC Board of Directors meets monthly in full Board meetings and Committees to discuss high-level strategy, oversight, and accountability of the organization. The frequency of meetings is dependent on organizational need and FTC Board Members should anticipate approximately 4-6 hours of Board-related activities each month. At least one hour per month is dedicated to the general board meeting or a committee meeting. Some examples of current Board responsibilities include financial management, adherence to ethical standards, assisting with fundraising, strategic direction of the organization, and oversight of Executive Staff. The priorities and responsibilities of the Board may fluctuate to adequately respond to the ever changing landscape of abortion law and policy.
Roles & Responsibilities
FTC is excited to welcome a new Treasurer. The Treasurer will offer guidance to the Executive Staff in ensuring fiscal planning, decision-making, and oversight at a governance level. The principle duties of a Treasurer and board member include:
- Overseeing the development of high level financial policies for the organization, and their review by the Board of Directors
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and its presentation for the Board of Directors for review
- Chairing the Board of Director’s Finance Committee
- Ensure appropriate quarterly financial statements are reviewed by the Board of Directors
- Ensure the Board of Directors regularly monitors the organization’s financial performance
- Ensures the organization maintains appropriate financial books and records and that these records are accurate, follow GAAP standards, and are up to date
- Ensures the government tax filings and remittances are submitted in a timely manner
- Serves as co-signer on all of the organizations’ financial accounts
- Ensures funds and reserves are properly held
- Recommends investment strategies when appropriate
- Heads up the organization’s audit committee
- Assists Executive Staff with annual financial reports
- Assists Executive Staff help keep the Board of Directors informed of important financial events, trends, and issues relevant to the organization
- Ability to communicate complex financial terms and processes to board members and staff.
- Provide monthly updates on the financial health of the organization to the board.
Suggested Skills and Experiences for FTC Board Members:
- Professional accounting, fiscal management, financial advisor, or other relevant credentialing
- Experience (however informal or formal) in social justice movements that will help inform the approach you’ll take to governing an abortion fund like FTC.
- Individuals with the lived experience of having an abortion.
- Passion for the cause & enthusiasm to join a board that believes in abortion access.
- Embody FTC values: equity, community, personal autonomy, honesty, and integrity.
- Enthusiasm to be a spokesperson and a fundraiser for FTC.
- Knowledge of financial regulatory compliance for nonprofits (preferred)
- Prior experience of leading a team or committee preferred (agenda setting, team project planning, etc)
- Prior non-profit governing board experience preferred
Who should apply?
We are specifically looking for folks with finance experience. All those with financial experience with a close connection or understanding of Texas and have an interest in contributing to this work are highly encouraged to apply.
